How to choose a name for your table-quiz team

When you attend a table quiz, you may be asked to choose a name for your quiz team.   This name will be

  • Written on your answer pages, so the markers know who the entry is from
  • Put on the scoreboard, so everyone can see how well you are doing
  • Called out by the quiz-host during the quiz - and hopefully when the winners are being announced.

A good table-quiz team name:

  • Is easy-enough for you, and the quiz-team, to write:   Maybe don't choose one with letters that aren't in English!
  • One you are happy for everyone is the room to see:  Some rude names can be funny the first time but not by round ten, or aren't appropriate at a family-friendly event.
  • Can be read out loud - so maybe leave out the complicated or hard-to-say words.

There are a few common types of quiz names

  • Names that describe who you are:

This could be based on your occupation, where you live, where you came from, how you know each other -etc.   For example,  the Irish Ramblers,   The Quiz Hounds, The Four Grannies.

  • Clever mix-ups of phrases about quizzes

For example, The Ezquisitors   /  Squizzlesticks   /   Three Conquiztadors.

  • Phrases to confused the quiz-host or other attendees

For example, The Winners    /   And in First Place   /   Tonight's Special Guests

  • Public-education messages

If the quiz is being to raise awareness about an issue or raise funds for an organisation, then people who are involved may want to choose team names that re-enforce the messages or marketing.  For example,   Slip, slop, slap   /  Never Drink and Drive    /   10,000 steps a Day

  • Some other random words

The name of a book, movie, your favourite recipe, a local landmark, a pub in your town, a famous politician - almost anything that takes your fancy
